Sentence Shortener

Three shorter versions of a sentence or paragraph that keep every fact and drop the filler.

How it works

What is the Sentence Shortener?

The Sentence Shortener is a free AI tool that rewrites a sentence or paragraph in fewer words. You choose how much shorter, a little, half or as short as possible, and it returns three different versions that keep every fact, number and name from the original, each labelled with what it cut.

How to use the Sentence Shortener

  1. Paste the sentence or paragraph, up to 1,500 characters.
  2. Pick how much shorter: a little shorter, half the length, or as short as possible.
  3. Press Shorten text and compare the three versions. Each one is labelled with what changed.
  4. Copy the one that keeps your meaning, and check that no fact was lost.

How do I shorten a sentence without losing meaning?

Cut in this order: filler phrases (in order to becomes to, due to the fact that becomes because), hedges (really, quite, basically), repetition, and finally passive voice, which needs more words than active. A sentence that names who did what is almost always shorter than one that does not. If the problem is hard words rather than too many, use the Text Simplifier instead.

What you must not cut is any fact, number or qualifier that changes the claim. "Most customers" and "customers" are different statements. The tool is told to keep every fact, and every version is checked to be shorter than the original, but read the result before you use it.

Why do shorter sentences matter for SEO and AI answers?

Shorter sentences raise every readability score and make a passage easier to quote. Answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite passages that state the answer plainly, usually in the first sentence under a heading. A 45 word opening sentence with two subordinate clauses is the kind they skip.

They also fit the places your copy ends up: meta descriptions, social posts, product cards and the one line a sales email gets before it is ignored.

Which words can I cut from a sentence?

Most cuts come from a short list. Replace in order to with to, due to the fact that with because, at this point in time with now, and is able to with can. Drop intensifiers that add nothing, such as very, really, actually and basically. Turn hidden verbs back into verbs: make a decision becomes decide, conduct an analysis becomes analyse.

Then look for repetition across sentences. A paragraph that says the same thing twice in different words loses nothing when one of them goes. Paste the result into the Word Counter to see how much you saved.

Is a sentence shortener the same as a summarizer?

No. A sentence shortener keeps every point and says it in fewer words. A summarizer picks the main points and drops the rest. If your paragraph has five facts, a shortened version still has five; a summary might have two.

Use a shortener for copy that has to stay complete, such as a product description, a meta description or a sentence in a report. Use a summary when the reader only needs the gist. After shortening, the Readability Checker shows whether the text also got easier to read.

Questions

Can ChatGPT help me rewrite a sentence?
Yes. ChatGPT and other models can shorten or rewrite a sentence if you ask precisely. This tool does the asking for you, with rules that keep every fact and number and drop near-duplicate rewrites.
What is a very short sentence called?
A very short sentence is usually just called a short or simple sentence. One with a single word, such as "Stop.", is a one-word sentence, and a fragment used for effect is often called a minor sentence.
How short should a sentence be?
Aim for an average of 15 to 20 words, and treat anything over 25 as a candidate to split. Vary the length: a run of eight word sentences reads as choppy.
Is the sentence shortener free?
Yes, with a free hyperank account. Each run returns three versions, and runs are rate limited so the tool stays free.
Is there a sentence shortener that does not use AI?
You can shorten by hand with the cuts listed above: filler phrases, hedges and hidden verbs first, then repetition. This tool uses an AI model, Google's Gemini, for the rewriting, with rules that keep every fact and reject any version that is not shorter than the original.
Does the sentence shortener work in other languages?
Yes. It is told to keep the original's language, tense and point of view, so a Spanish paragraph comes back in Spanish. The cut lists on this page are English, but most languages have the same kinds of filler.
