Reddit Search

Find the Reddit threads that actually answer a question, across Reddit or in one subreddit.

How it works

What is the Reddit Search?

Reddit Search is a free tool that finds the Reddit threads that best answer a question. It searches all of Reddit or one subreddit, ranks threads by relevance rather than by date, and shows each thread's subreddit, comment count and a snippet, so you can tell which ones are worth opening before you click.

How to use the Reddit Search

  1. In What to search for, type your question or a few words. Put a phrase in quotes to match it exactly.
  2. Add a Subreddit to search only that community, or leave it empty to search all of Reddit.
  3. Pick when the threads were Posted, from Past day to Any time.
  4. Press Search Reddit and scan the titles, subreddits and comment counts of the top ten threads.
  5. Open the threads that look useful. Each link goes straight to the thread on Reddit.

Why is Reddit's own search so bad?

Reddit's built-in search matches words in titles more than it judges which thread actually answers the question, and it leans towards recent posts. A five-year-old thread with two hundred detailed replies can sit below last week's one-line question that nobody answered.

This tool ranks threads the way a web search engine does: by how well the whole thread, replies included, answers what you typed, and by how many other pages point to it. That is the same reason so many people add "reddit" to the end of a Google search, and it is why the thread that comes first here is usually the one with the most useful discussion, not just the closest title.

Reddit search tips and operators

Put a phrase in double quotes to match it exactly: "alternative to Notion". Use OR in capitals to accept either word: CRM OR "client tracker". Put a minus sign before a word to leave out threads that use it: budget -wedding. These work in the box here because the search runs through a web search engine.

Reddit's own search box has operators of its own if you search there: subreddit: to limit to one community, author: for one user's posts, title: to match the title only, site: for link posts to one website, and flair: for a subreddit's post flair.

For most questions, a short phrase in the words a real person would use beats a long string of keywords. Search for the problem, "keep track of client hours", rather than the category, "time tracking software".

To find honest reviews of a product, add the words people use when they report back after using something: "after a year", "switched from", "regret" or "worth it". Threads like these tend to come from long-term users rather than people who have just signed up, and the replies usually add more experiences, good and bad.

How do you search one subreddit?

Enter the subreddit's name in Subreddit, with or without the r/. The results then come only from that community, which helps when a question has a different answer in different places: the best CRM in r/smallbusiness is not the best CRM in r/sales, and the advice in r/personalfinance differs from r/financialindependence.

If you do not know which subreddits discuss a topic, the Subreddit Finder lists them, ranked by how much of the conversation happens in each. Run it first, then search inside the top two or three.

What this search does not cover

It finds public threads that a search engine has indexed, which is most of Reddit but not all of it. Private and quarantined subreddits are never included, and posts from the last few hours may not have been indexed yet. Deleted posts do not come back either: once a post is removed, its page drops out of the index.

Each search returns the ten threads that answer the query best, rather than a long list sorted by date. For a topic you want to follow over time, run the same search again with Posted set to Past week, or use the Reddit Leads Finder, which looks specifically for people asking for recommendations.

Questions

How do I search Reddit without an account?
Use this tool or a web search with "reddit" added. Neither needs a Reddit account, and both find public threads.
Can I search Reddit by date?
Yes. Set Posted to Past day, Past week, Past month or Past year to keep only threads from that window.
How do I search for an exact phrase on Reddit?
Put the phrase in double quotes, such as "alternative to Notion". Only threads that use that exact wording come back.
Does it search Reddit comments too?
Yes, indirectly. A thread's page includes its replies, so a thread can match on words that appear only in the comments. The snippet sometimes comes from a reply rather than the post.
Why does a thread I know exists not show up?
This search finds the threads a search engine has indexed, which is most public threads but not every one, and rarely posts from the last few hours. Private and quarantined subreddits are never included.
Is this Reddit search free?
Yes, with a free hyperank account.
