Free tool
XML Sitemap Viewer
Open any site's sitemap and read it as a list rather than as XML.
How it works
What is the XML Sitemap Viewer?
The XML Sitemap Viewer is a free tool that finds a website's sitemap and shows the page URLs inside it as a readable list of links. Give it a sitemap URL or a bare domain. If the file is a sitemap index, it opens up to ten of the sitemaps it lists and shows up to 300 pages.
How to use the XML Sitemap Viewer
- Enter a sitemap URL, such as https://example.com/sitemap.xml, or just the domain.
- Press View sitemap. For a domain, the tool reads robots.txt for a
Sitemap:line, then tries /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml and /sitemap-index.xml. - Check the sitemap URL shown under the page count. That is the file the tool actually read.
- Scan the list of pages. Each one is a link, so you can open any URL to check that it still loads.
How do I view the sitemap of a website?
Open the site's /robots.txt and look for a Sitemap: line, or try /sitemap.xml at the root of the domain. Most sites keep it in one of those two places.
This viewer runs the same search for you and lists up to 300 page URLs. To read one sitemap in particular, paste its full URL instead of the domain.
What does an XML sitemap contain?
An XML sitemap is a <urlset> of <url> entries. Each entry must have a <loc>, the page's full URL, and may add <lastmod>, <changefreq> and <priority>.
Google uses <loc>, and <lastmod> when it is accurate. It ignores <changefreq> and <priority>. That is why this viewer shows only the URLs: they are the part of the file that tells search engines which pages exist.
What should you look for in a sitemap?
Look for URLs that should not be there. A sitemap is the list of pages a site asks search engines to index, so every entry should be a live, canonical page you want found.
The usual finds are http:// URLs left over from an HTTPS move, staging or preview URLs, tag and paginated archive pages that outnumber the real content, both the slash and no-slash version of one page, and pages that now return a 404.
Questions
- Can I view the sitemap of any website?
- Yes, you can view the sitemap of any website that publishes one, because a sitemap is a public file meant for crawlers to read. Enter the domain and the viewer looks in robots.txt and the common sitemap paths for you.
- What does an XML sitemap look like?
- An XML sitemap looks like a list of
<url>blocks inside a<urlset>element, each with a<loc>holding one page address and often a<lastmod>date. In a browser it appears as raw XML, or as a styled table if the site adds a stylesheet. - Where is my sitemap in WordPress?
- WordPress serves its built-in sitemap at /wp-sitemap.xml. If Yoast or Rank Math is active, the plugin replaces it with /sitemap_index.xml. Enter your domain here and the viewer checks robots.txt and the common paths for you.
- Where is the sitemap on a Shopify store?
- Shopify generates a store's sitemap automatically at /sitemap.xml. It is a sitemap index that links to separate sitemaps for products, collections, pages and blog posts, and the viewer opens those child sitemaps to list the pages.
- What is the difference between an HTML sitemap and an XML sitemap?
- An HTML sitemap is a web page of links written for visitors. An XML sitemap is a file written for search engine crawlers, listing the URLs a site wants indexed. This viewer reads XML sitemaps.
