How it works
What is the Opengraph Viewer?
The Opengraph Viewer is a free tool that fetches a web page and reads the Open Graph and Twitter Card tags in its HTML. It draws the share cards Facebook and X would build from those tags, then lists every og:, twitter: and basic meta tag it found, so you see what a shared link will show.
How to use the Opengraph Viewer
- Paste the full URL of the page you want to share, such as https://example.com/blog/post. The tool reads that exact page, not the homepage.
- Press View Opengraph. The tool fetches the page's HTML without running JavaScript, which is how share crawlers read it.
- Check the two previews, Facebook / OpenGraph and Twitter / X, each with the image, title, description and domain the tags produce.
- Read the three columns below for the raw
og:,twitter:and basic meta values. A tag the page does not serve does not appear in the list.
What are Open Graph tags?
Open Graph tags are <meta> tags in a page's <head> that tell social platforms and messaging apps what to show when someone shares the link. The protocol names four as required: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. og:description and og:site_name are optional, but they fill the line under the headline in most previews.
X reads its own twitter: tags first and falls back to the Open Graph ones when they are missing. twitter:card has no Open Graph equivalent: it is the tag that asks for the wide summary_large_image layout instead of the small summary card.
Why are my Open Graph tags not showing?
Most often because they are added by JavaScript. Share crawlers read the HTML your server returns, and this viewer reads it the same way, without running scripts. If a tag shows in your browser's element inspector but not here, it is injected after the page loads, and the fix is server-rendered metadata.
The viewer accepts a tag written with either property= or name=. When a page has no Open Graph title or description, the preview falls back to its <title> and meta description, and a card reading No title means the page has neither.
What size should an Open Graph image be?
1200x630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio. It is the size Facebook recommends for the wide link preview, and it fills the large cards on LinkedIn and X too. Keep text and logos away from the edges, because some apps crop the image.
og:image should hold an absolute URL, starting with https://, on a host that serves the file without a login or cookie. A relative path such as /images/card.png is not read the same way by every platform, so write the full address.
Questions
- How do I check the Open Graph tags on a website?
- Paste the page URL into an Open Graph checker such as this viewer, which fetches the page and lists every
og:andtwitter:tag it serves. You can also view the page source and search forog:, but that shows the tags without the card they produce. - Do Open Graph tags help SEO?
- Open Graph tags are not a Google ranking factor. They control how a link looks when it is shared on social platforms and in messaging apps, which affects how many people click it, not where the page ranks.
- What is the best OG image size?
- The standard OG image size is 1200x630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio. It is the size Facebook recommends, and it fills the large link cards on LinkedIn and X as well.
- Why is my OG image not showing or not updating?
- An OG image usually fails to show because the
og:imageURL is relative, blocked or behind a login, or because the platform cached an earlier scrape. Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector both re-scrape a URL on request, and renaming the image file forces a fresh fetch everywhere. - What is the difference between Open Graph and Twitter Cards?
- Open Graph is the tag set most platforms read, while Twitter Cards are X's own
twitter:tags. X falls back toog:title,og:descriptionandog:imagewhen thetwitter:versions are missing, so most pages only need to addtwitter:cardby hand. - What is the difference between Open Graph and schema markup?
- Open Graph tags describe a page for social share previews, while schema markup in JSON-LD describes it for search engines, which can use it for rich results. They do different jobs, and many pages carry both.
