How it works
What is the AI Tone Changer?
The AI Tone Changer is a free tool that rewrites text in the tone you pick: professional, friendly, confident, persuasive, casual, empathetic, formal or witty. It returns three different versions, each labelled with how it lands, and keeps every fact, number, name and request from the original while changing only how it sounds.
How to use the AI Tone Changer
- Paste the text: an email, a message, a post or a paragraph, up to 1,500 characters.
- Pick the tone you want it to have.
- Press Change tone and compare the three versions.
- Copy the one that sounds right, and check every fact and date survived.
What are the different tones in writing?
Tone is the attitude a text carries toward its subject and its reader. The common ones are formal and informal, which set the register; friendly, empathetic and enthusiastic, which set the warmth; confident, assertive and persuasive, which set the force; and neutral or objective, which hold back. Humorous, witty and ironic tones add play, and serious or urgent tones remove it.
The same sentence can carry any of them. "We need the report by Friday" is neutral. "Could you send the report by Friday? It would really help" is friendly. "The report is due Friday" is firm.
How do I choose the right tone?
Match the tone to the reader and to what you need from them. A customer with a problem needs empathy before a solution. A busy executive needs confidence and brevity. A first email to a stranger needs to be friendly without being familiar. When in doubt, professional is the safe default: clear and courteous, with no slang and no stiffness.
On your website, keep one tone across pages. Answer engines quote passages out of context, so a page that switches from formal to jokey reads oddly when one paragraph is lifted out. For copy that also needs to be shorter or simpler, use the Sentence Shortener or the Text Simplifier.
What are the 7 types of tone?
There is no official list, but these seven cover most everyday writing: formal, informal, friendly, confident, empathetic, persuasive and humorous. Here is one plain sentence, "The update is delayed until Monday," in each.
Formal: "Please note that the update has been postponed until Monday." Informal: "The update's been pushed to Monday." Friendly: "Quick heads-up: the update is moving to Monday. Thanks for bearing with us." Confident: "The update ships Monday." Empathetic: "We know you were waiting for this update, and we're sorry it has slipped to Monday." Persuasive: "Moving the update to Monday gives us time to test it properly, so it works the first time." Humorous: "The update is taking a long weekend. It will be back on Monday."
The facts stay the same in every version: one update, one new day. Only word choice, sentence length and attitude change, which is what this tool changes.
What are negative tones in writing?
Negative tones make a reader feel judged, blamed or brushed off: sarcastic, condescending, defensive, passive-aggressive, impatient and cold. They usually creep in by accident, through phrases such as "as I already said", "obviously" or "per my last email".
"As I mentioned in my last email, the update is on Monday" reads as passive-aggressive. "The update is on Monday, as planned" says the same thing neutrally. Picking Professional or Empathetic here is a quick way to take the edge off a message written in a hurry.
How do you describe tone in writing?
Describe tone with an adjective for the writer's attitude: optimistic, critical, nostalgic, urgent, playful or detached. To find the right word, look at three things. Word choice: "slashed" and "reduced" give the same fact different heat. Sentence length: short sentences sound sure or abrupt, long ones reflective. Punctuation: an exclamation mark adds energy, and several add noise. Long sentences also make text harder to read, which the Readability Checker measures.
Questions
- Can AI change the tone of my writing?
- Yes. Language models are good at rewriting the same content in a different tone, as long as they are told to keep the facts. This tool instructs the model to keep every fact, number and request and never add one.
- What is the difference between tone and voice?
- Voice is a writer's or brand's consistent personality, the same in every piece. Tone shifts with the situation: the same brand voice can sound celebratory in a launch post and apologetic in an outage email.
- Is the tone changer free?
- Yes, with a free hyperank account. Each run returns three versions, and runs are rate limited so the tool stays free.
- Does it work for emails?
- Yes. Paste the body of the email, choose the tone, and keep the greeting and sign-off you prefer. It keeps dates, names and the request intact.
- What are 5 examples of tone words?
- Optimistic, formal, sarcastic, sympathetic and urgent. Tone words are adjectives that name the attitude behind a text, so any word that describes how a person sounds can be one.
- What are the five types of tone?
- There is no single standard list. A practical five for everyday writing is formal, informal, friendly, serious and humorous, and most other tones are shades of these.
- What are the 7 types of writing styles with examples?
- Most guides teach four main styles: expository, which explains (a how-to guide); descriptive, which paints a scene (a travel piece); persuasive, which argues (an opinion column); and narrative, which tells a story (a short story). Lists of seven usually add creative, technical and journalistic writing. Tone sits on top of any style.
