Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator
Work out engagement rate from your own numbers, by followers or by reach.
How it works
What is the Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator?
The Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator is a free tool that works out a post's engagement rate from numbers you type. Enter followers, likes and comments, and optionally saves, shares and accounts reached. It shows the rate by followers and by reach as you type, and grades the post against accounts of a similar size.
How to use the Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator
- Enter the account's Followers, then the post's Likes and Comments.
- Add Saves, Shares and Accounts reached from the post's insights if you have them. All three are optional.
- Read the By followers and By reach rates, which update as you type.
- Check the grade under them: Low, Average, Good or High compared with accounts of the same size, with the typical range beside it.
What is the Instagram engagement rate formula?
Engagement rate is engagements divided by a base, times 100. This calculator counts likes, comments, saves and shares as engagements, and uses two bases: followers, which anyone can see, and accounts reached, which only the account owner sees in the post's insights.
So a post with 400 likes, 30 comments, 50 saves and 20 shares on an account of 20,000 followers has 500 engagements and a rate by followers of 2.50%. If 8,000 accounts saw it, the rate by reach is 6.25%.
Engagement rate by followers or by reach: which should I use?
Rate by followers compares accounts fairly, because every account shows its follower count. The grade uses likes and comments per follower. Rate by reach says how well a post held the people who actually saw it, including people who don't follow you, which makes it the better measure for comparing your own posts with each other.
A Reel shown well beyond your followers can score low by reach and high by followers at once. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions.
Why is the grade based on likes and comments only?
Likes and comments are the counts anyone can see on a post, so grading on likes and comments per follower compares like with like across accounts, including accounts graded in the Instagram Engagement Rate Checker. The calculator shows that figure next to the grade.
Your rate by followers can therefore be higher than the graded figure when you enter saves and shares. To grade an account you don't own, paste its post links into the Instagram Engagement Rate Checker instead.
Questions
- How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?
- Add a post's likes, comments, saves and shares, divide by the account's followers, and multiply by 100. Divide by accounts reached instead for the rate by reach. This calculator does both as you type.
- How do I calculate engagement rate by reach on Instagram?
- Open the post's insights, note Accounts reached, and divide the post's likes, comments, saves and shares by it, then multiply by 100. Enter the reach in this calculator's Accounts reached field to see it worked out.
- How do I calculate the average engagement rate on Instagram?
- Work out the rate for each of your last ten or so posts and take the average. To skip the arithmetic, paste those post links into the Instagram Engagement Rate Checker, which averages them against the account's followers.
- What is a good engagement rate for Instagram Reels?
- Grade a Reel the same way as a post: likes and comments per follower against accounts of your size. Between 10K and 50K followers, 0.49% to 0.65% is typical. Reels often reach people who don't follow you, so check the rate by reach too.
