FAQ Schema Generator
Turn questions and answers into valid FAQPage JSON-LD, ready to paste into your page.
How it works
What is the FAQ Schema Generator?
The FAQ Schema Generator is a free tool that turns your questions and answers into FAQPage structured data in JSON-LD, the format Google recommends. Add as many questions as the page has, copy the code with or without its script tag, and paste it into the page. Special characters are escaped, and half-filled questions are left out.
How to use the FAQ Schema Generator
- Type each question and its answer exactly as they appear on the page.
- Add a row for every question with Add question.
- Choose whether to wrap the code in a
<script type="application/ld+json">tag. - Copy the code, paste it into the page, and check it with the Schema Markup Validator.
What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema is structured data that marks up a list of questions and answers on a page using the schema.org FAQPage type. Each question is a Question with a name, and each answer is an acceptedAnswer with a text. It tells search engines and AI systems, in a form they read without guessing, which text on the page is a question and which is its answer.
Does FAQ schema still work in 2026?
It still works as structured data, but the rich result changed. Since August 2023 Google shows the expandable FAQ questions in results only for well-known government and health sites. For everyone else the markup is read and understood but does not change how the result looks.
That is not a reason to drop it. FAQ markup labels question and answer pairs explicitly, which is the shape answer engines quote, and it costs nothing to add when the page already has the questions. Check it with the Schema Markup Validator, and use the Schema Markup Generator for other types.
Where do I put FAQ schema on my page?
Paste the script tag anywhere in the page's HTML, usually in the head or at the end of the body. In WordPress, use a custom HTML block or your SEO plugin's schema field. In Shopify, add it to the page or product template. The questions and answers must also be visible on the page itself: marking up text that readers cannot see breaks Google's structured data guidelines.
What does FAQPage JSON-LD look like?
A FAQPage block is one JSON object with three parts: @context set to https://schema.org, @type set to FAQPage, and mainEntity, the list of questions. Each item in that list has @type set to Question, the question text in name, and an acceptedAnswer object of type Answer whose text holds the answer.
Wrapped in <script type="application/ld+json">, the block sits in the page's HTML without changing anything visitors see. The generator writes exactly this structure, indented by two spaces, from the rows you fill in. Rows with only a question or only an answer are left out, and it tells you how many were skipped.
Why use JSON-LD instead of microdata for FAQ schema?
Google reads FAQ markup in JSON-LD, microdata and RDFa, and recommends JSON-LD because it is the easiest to add and maintain. Microdata and RDFa are attributes woven through the page's visible HTML, so a redesign of the FAQ section can quietly break them. JSON-LD lives in one script block, separate from the layout, so you can edit the questions without touching the design, and most CMSs let you add it without editing templates.
What are the most common FAQ schema mistakes?
The most common mistake is marking up questions that are not visible on the page. Google's guidelines require the full question and answer to appear on the page, so paste the same text into the markup that readers see.
The others: using FAQPage for a forum thread or a product questions section where visitors post the answers, which is what QAPage is for; adding the same FAQ block to every page, when Google asks you to mark up only one instance of FAQ content repeated across a site; using FAQ answers for advertising; and broken JSON. Broken JSON usually comes from a quote mark or a backslash inside an answer. This generator builds the code with a JSON encoder, so quotes and backslashes are escaped, and it writes </ as <\/ so an answer that mentions a closing script tag cannot end the block early.
How do I find questions for my FAQ section?
Use the questions your customers already ask: support emails, sales calls, reviews, and the People also ask box in Google for your main search term. Open each answer with the direct answer in one sentence, then add the detail, because a self-contained first sentence is the easiest part for search engines and AI assistants to quote. To see what people ask AI chat about your category, the AI Search Query Generator suggests queries worth answering.
Questions
- How many questions should FAQ schema have?
- Mark up every FAQ that is visible on the page, and no others. There is no fixed minimum or maximum; most pages have three to ten.
- Can I use HTML in FAQ answers?
- Google allows a few HTML tags in the answer text, such as links, lists and bold. Plain text is the safest choice, and this generator outputs the answer exactly as you type it.
- Can I have FAQ schema on every page?
- Only on pages that actually show a list of questions and answers. Adding FAQ markup to pages without visible FAQs breaks Google's guidelines.
- What is the difference between FAQPage and QAPage?
- FAQPage is for questions the site itself answers, one answer each. QAPage is for a single question with answers from users, like a forum thread.
- Is the FAQ schema generator free?
- Yes, with a free hyperank account. The code is built in your browser as you type, so your questions and answers are not sent to a server.
- Can a page have FAQ schema and other schema together?
- Yes. A page can carry several JSON-LD blocks, for example
ArticleorProductalongsideFAQPage. Put each in its own script tag, or combine them in one@grapharray. - Does the schema answer have to match the page word for word?
- It should. Google requires the full text of each question and answer to be on the page, so use the same wording in the generator that readers see, and update both when you edit one.
- How do I test FAQ schema?
- Paste the code or the page URL into the Schema Markup Validator, which checks it against schema.org and lists any errors. After publishing, view the page source and search for
FAQPageto confirm your CMS kept the script tag intact.
