On-Page SEO Audit
Every on-page issue on one URL, sorted by how much it costs you, with the element that caused it.
How it works
What is the On-Page SEO Audit?
The On-Page SEO Audit is a free tool that reads the HTML of one page and lists its on-page issues, ranked by impact. It checks the title, meta description, headings, image alt text, canonical tag, mobile viewport, HTTPS, structured data and HTML weight, and gives every finding a recommendation. A target keyword adds checks on the title and description.
How to use the On-Page SEO Audit
- Paste the full URL of the page you want to audit. The path matters: the audit reads that exact page, not the whole site.
- Add a target keyword if you have one. It adds two checks: whether the keyword appears in the title and in the meta description.
- Press Audit page. The tool fetches the HTML the server sends, the version a crawler receives first.
- Read the counts of critical issues, warnings and good elements at the top.
- Work through the issues. They are grouped by section with the highest impact first, and each one has a recommendation and, where there is one, the element that caused it.
What does an on-page SEO audit check?
An on-page SEO audit checks the parts of one page you control in its HTML: the title, the meta description, the headings, image alt text and the tags in the head that tell search engines how to treat the page. This audit reads the served HTML, which is the version a crawler receives first.
The result is a list of fixes for that one page. Each finding names the problem, its impact and what to change, so you can work through it top to bottom and audit the page again when you are done.
How are the audit's issues ranked?
By impact: high, then medium, then low. High impact goes to problems that stop a page doing its job: no title, no meta description, no H1, no mobile viewport, a URL not on HTTPS, a keyword missing from the title, or more than half the images without alt text. Those count as critical issues.
Medium impact covers problems that shape how well a working page does: title or description length, more than one H1, no H2 sections, some images without alt text, no canonical tag, no structured data and more than 500 KB of HTML. Where a finding comes from a specific element, such as the competing H1s or the first three images missing alt text, the audit shows it.
On-page SEO audit vs on-page SEO checker: which should I use?
Use the audit when you want a to-do list, and the On-Page SEO Checker when you want a score to track. The audit sorts every failure by impact, each with a recommendation.
The checker grades a page across ten groups, including Open Graph tags, links, hreflang and code quality, and returns a score out of 100. The two scores are not comparable, so compare each tool against its own earlier results.
Questions
- What is an on-page SEO audit?
- An on-page SEO audit is a check of the elements on a single page that affect how search engines read it, such as the title, meta description, headings, alt text and canonical tag. It ends in a list of fixes rather than just a score.
- What should an on-page SEO audit checklist include?
- An on-page SEO audit checklist should cover a title of 30 to 60 characters, a meta description of 120 to 160, one H1, H2 sections, alt text on meaningful images, a canonical tag, a mobile viewport and HTTPS. This audit checks each of those, plus structured data and HTML weight.
- What is a good on-page SEO score?
- A good on-page SEO score is one with no critical issues left, whatever the number says. The score here is the share of the audit's checks the page passes, so fix the high-impact items first and let the score follow.
- What is the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?
- On-page SEO is what you change on the page itself: its content, HTML tags and structure. Off-page SEO is what happens elsewhere, mainly links and mentions from other sites. This audit covers on-page SEO.
- Is on-page SEO the same as technical SEO?
- No. On-page SEO is about one page's content and tags, while technical SEO is about how the whole site is crawled, rendered and indexed, through things like robots.txt, sitemaps, redirects and speed. They overlap on tags such as the canonical and the viewport, which this audit checks.
