How it works
What is the On-Page SEO Checker?
The On-Page SEO Checker is a free tool that reads the HTML of one page and scores it out of 100. It marks each check as a pass, warning or fail across ten groups, from the URL, title and meta tags to headings, images, links and crawlability. A target keyword adds checks on where it appears.
How to use the On-Page SEO Checker
- Paste the full URL of the page to check. The tool reads that exact URL, so include the path.
- Add a target keyword if you want placement checks. It adds six: the keyword in the URL path, the title, the meta description, an H1 and image alt text, plus its density in the body copy.
- Press Check on-page SEO.
- Read the score and the count of fails, warnings and passes, then the page overview: word count, load time, page size, images and internal links.
- Open the ten check groups, from URL Structure to Crawlability, and fix the fails first.
What does an on-page SEO checker check?
An on-page SEO checker reads what a crawler can see in one page's HTML without visiting any other page. This one runs checks in ten groups: URL structure, title tags, meta tags, headings, content, images, links and hreflang, code quality, technical SEO and crawlability.
It reads the HTML the server sends, which is the version a crawler receives first, and lists every check with its result so you can see what passed as well as what to fix.
How is the on-page SEO score calculated?
The score is the share of checks the page passes. A pass counts one point, a warning half a point and a fail nothing, and the total is divided by the number of checks that ran and shown out of 100.
Every check carries the same weight, so start with the fails on the title, H1, meta description, HTTPS and mobile viewport, then work through the rest.
What title length, meta description length and H1 count does it want?
A title passes at 30 to 60 characters and a meta description at 120 to 160. Google cuts titles by pixel width, not by character count, so 60 characters is a safe proxy rather than a hard limit. The meta description is not a ranking factor, and Google often writes its own snippet from the page text.
One H1 passes, none fails and more than one warns. A skipped heading level, such as an H2 followed by an H4, is a warning. Alt text passes when every image has a non-empty alt attribute.
Questions
- How do I check the on-page SEO of a page?
- Paste the page's URL into an on-page SEO checker such as this one and press Check on-page SEO. It reads the page's HTML and marks each title, meta tag, heading, content, image, link and crawlability check as a pass, warning or fail.
- What is a good on-page SEO score?
- A good on-page SEO score is one with no fails on the title, H1, meta description, HTTPS or mobile viewport. Beyond that, the number measures how many basics are in place, not how well the page will rank: a page at 95 with nothing useful to say still loses to a page at 70 that answers the query.
- What is on-page SEO?
- On-page SEO is the work you do on a page itself so search engines understand it: its title, meta description, headings, body copy, images, internal links and markup. It is the part of SEO you can change without anyone else's help.
- How many H1 tags should a page have?
- A page should usually have one H1 tag that states what the page is about. This checker passes one, warns on more than one and fails on none, because the headings are how a parser builds the page's outline.
- What keyword density should a page have?
- Keyword density has no target Google works to, so write naturally. This checker passes 1 to 3% because the band catches the two real failures: a page that never names its subject, and a page that repeats it until it reads badly.
- Is the meta description a ranking factor?
- No, the meta description is not a Google ranking factor. It shapes the snippet people read before they click, which is why the checker still grades its length, and Google often replaces it with text from the page.
