Twitter Engagement Rate Calculator

Work out engagement rate from your own numbers, or scan a public account's recent posts.

How it works

What is the Twitter Engagement Rate Calculator?

The Twitter Engagement Rate Calculator is a free tool that works out engagement rate for X posts in two ways. Type a post's numbers to get its rate by impressions and by followers, each graded A to D, or scan a public profile to see the median rate across its recent original posts and its best post.

How to use the Twitter Engagement Rate Calculator

  1. Under Work it out from a post's numbers, enter Impressions and Followers, then the post's Likes, Reposts, Replies and Bookmarks. Quotes is optional.
  2. Read the two rates as you type: By impressions and By followers, each with a grade from A to D.
  3. To benchmark a whole account, go to Scan a public profile, enter an @handle or an x.com link and press Scan profile.
  4. Read the median rate by views and by followers across the account's recent original posts, the averages beside them, and the best post by interactions.

How is Twitter engagement rate calculated?

Engagement rate is engagements divided by a base, times 100. This calculator counts likes, reposts, replies, bookmarks and quotes as engagements, and works it out against two bases: impressions, which X shows on a post as views, and followers.

The two answer different questions. Rate by impressions says how well a post held the people who saw it. Rate by followers says how much of the audience it moved. A post shown well beyond the account's followers can score high on one and low on the other.

What is a good engagement rate on X?

X does not publish an official benchmark, so any threshold is a rule of thumb. By impressions, this calculator grades 3% and above as A (Excellent), 1% and above as B (Good), 0.5% and above as C (Average), and anything lower as D (Below average). By followers, the bands move with account size: under 10,000 followers an A needs 4%, and over a million it needs 0.4%.

Rates fall as accounts grow, because a small, focused following interacts more per head than a large one. Compare an account with others of a similar size, not with the biggest accounts in its field.

Why does the profile scan use the median?

One viral post can pull an average far above what a typical post does. The median is the middle post of the sample, so it describes a typical post rather than an outlier.

The scan shows both. When the average sits well above the median, a few standout posts are carrying the account, and the best post shown underneath is usually one of them.
