What is the ChatGPT Prompt Generator?
The ChatGPT Prompt Generator is a free tool that turns a plain description of a task into a ready-to-paste prompt for ChatGPT. It comes with a persona, explicit instructions, an output format and constraints that discourage invented answers. Paste it into a new chat, or into the system message of an API call.
How to use the ChatGPT Prompt Generator
- Describe what you want ChatGPT to do in the first box, such as "Write a launch email for a technical SEO product".
- Add the audience, tone, constraints and anything it must not say in Context. It is optional, but it decides whether the prompt is reusable.
- Press Generate prompt.
- Copy the prompt from Your Optimized Prompt, or press Open in ChatGPT. The first time, sign up free to reveal it.
How does ChatGPT read a prompt?
In two layers. An API request carries a system message (called the developer message on newer models) that sets standing rules, and a user message that carries the request. GPT models treat the first as policy and the second as the thing to act on, so a persona buried mid-paragraph in a task gets read as background rather than instruction.
Anything that stays the same across runs, such as who the model is, the output shape and what it must never do, belongs in the standing layer. The task belongs in the user message. Blended together, the prompt still works but stops being reusable.
What makes a ChatGPT prompt work?
Literal structure. Numbered steps get followed in order. A described format gets approximated; a shown format gets copied. If the output has to be JSON, give the keys. If it has to be 200 words, say 200 words rather than "brief".
It also rewards a stable opening. OpenAI caches prompt prefixes automatically once a prompt passes 1,024 tokens, and the cache only matches from the first token, so instructions first and variable input last makes repeat calls cheaper.
Where do you paste the prompt in ChatGPT?
In the ChatGPT app, paste it as the first message of a new chat. For a prompt you reuse, put the standing part (persona, rules, format) into a Project's instructions or your Custom Instructions and send only the task each time. In the API, the standing part goes in the system message and the task in the user message.
Then run it twice on the same input. If the two answers differ in structure rather than wording, the format instruction is not specific enough yet.

- Do these prompts work on reasoning models like GPT-5?
- Yes, the persona, format and constraint parts carry over. What matters less is step-by-step handholding: reasoning models work through the problem before answering, so adding "think step by step" mostly buys a longer answer.
