Grok Prompt Generator
Prompts written for Grok's current models.
How it works
What is the Grok Prompt Generator?
The Grok Prompt Generator is a free tool that turns a task description into a ready-to-paste prompt for xAI's Grok. It comes with a persona, clear instructions, a format and constraints, and adds an instruction to flag anything Grok cannot verify, so a confident answer and a checked answer are easier to tell apart.
How to use the Grok Prompt Generator
- Describe what you want Grok to do in the first box, such as "Summarise this week's reaction to a product launch".
- Add the audience, register, constraints and anything it must not say in Context. It is optional.
- Press Generate prompt.
- Copy the prompt from Optimized Grok Prompt, or press Open in Grok. The first time, sign up free to reveal it.
How is prompting Grok different from prompting ChatGPT?
Less in structure than people expect. xAI's API uses the OpenAI chat format: the same roles, the same message array and the same parameter names, with a different base URL. A prompt written for GPT runs on Grok with the model name swapped.
What changes is emphasis. This generator is set up for a model that answers directly, so the prompt it writes spends an instruction on marking what could not be verified. If the output is headed somewhere formal, name the register in Context rather than assuming it.
Can a prompt make Grok search X and the web?
Not on the API. There, live search is switched on in the request as a tool, not by asking for it in the prompt. A prompt that says "search for recent posts" without search enabled gets an answer from training data, written as though it had searched.
The Grok app decides for itself when to search. Either way, spend the prompt on what a usable source looks like and ask for dates on anything time-sensitive.
Where do you paste a Grok prompt?
In the Grok app, paste it as the first message of a new conversation. On the API, the persona and rules go in the system message and the task in the user message, exactly as with an OpenAI call.
Questions
- Is the Grok prompt generator free?
- Yes. The Grok prompt generator is free and needs no X Premium plan or xAI API key. The first time, you create a free hyperank account to reveal the result.
- Is Grok the same as Groq?
- No. Grok is the AI model and assistant made by xAI. Groq is a separate company that builds chips and cloud inference for running other companies' open models.
- What is a Grok system prompt?
- A Grok system prompt is the standing instruction that sets Grok's role, rules and format, sent as the system message on the API. xAI has published the system prompts behind its own Grok apps on GitHub, which is a useful reference for how it words standing rules.
- Does Grok know about things that happened this week?
- Grok knows recent events only when it searches. Without search the answer comes from training data, and the model does not always say which it used, so ask for dates on anything time-sensitive.
- How is this different from the ChatGPT prompt generator?
- The skeleton is the same: persona, instructions, format, constraints. The Grok prompt generator adds an instruction to flag unverified claims, so a checked answer is easier to tell from a confident one.
