Keyword Rank Checker
Where your domain ranks on Google for a keyword, live, and whether the AI Overview cites you.
How it works
What is the Keyword Rank Checker?
The Keyword Rank Checker is a free tool that searches Google live for a keyword and finds where your domain appears in the top 30 results. It shows the position, the page that ranks, other pages from your site in the results, the top 10 for comparison, and whether Google showed an AI Overview and cited your domain in it.
How to use the Keyword Rank Checker
- Enter one keyword, the way people type it into Google.
- Enter your domain. Pages on subdomains count too.
- Pick the country to search from and press Check ranking.
- Read your position and ranking page, then check whether the AI Overview cites you and which sources it uses instead.
How do I check where my website ranks on Google?
Searching yourself is unreliable: Google personalises results by your location, history and device, so your own search can show you higher than strangers see you. A rank checker searches from a neutral location in the country you pick, without your history, and reads the results the way an average searcher gets them.
Google Search Console shows a third view, your average position over time across every query. Use this tool for a live answer on one keyword and Search Console for trends.
Why does my ranking change from day to day?
Rankings move because the results move: Google updates its index constantly, competitors publish, and features like AI Overviews, People Also Ask and video carousels appear and disappear for the same query. A shift of one to three positions from one day to the next is normal noise. A drop of ten or more, held over several days, is worth investigating.
Does ranking on Google mean appearing in AI answers?
Not necessarily. Google's AI Overview often cites pages from the top results, but it also cites pages ranking lower, and it skips some top results entirely. This tool reports both numbers side by side for that reason: a page can rank fifth and be absent from the AI Overview, which answers the query before anyone scrolls.
ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity each choose sources their own way. The ChatGPT Visibility Checker and the AI Brand Visibility Checker show where you stand in those.
What counts as a position in this rank checker?
Only organic results count. The checker reads the blue-link results Google returns and numbers them from 1 to 30, skipping ads, the AI Overview, People Also Ask boxes, map packs and video carousels. So position 1 means the first organic result, which on a busy results page can sit well below the top of the screen.
Your domain matches on any page of the site, including subdomains such as blog.example.com. The first match is your position. If other pages from your site also appear in the top 30, they are listed under Also ranking, so you can see when two of your pages compete for the same query.
Should I trust a rank checker or Google Search Console?
Trust both, for different questions. A rank checker answers "where am I right now, for this exact keyword, in this country", from one live search. Search Console answers "where have I been on average", across every search where your page appeared, including personalised and local results. Its average position blends many queries and locations, so it often differs from a live check by several places. It also lists only queries where your page appeared at least once, so a keyword you never rank for is simply missing from it.
When the two disagree sharply, Search Console is the better record of what real searchers saw, and the live check is the better picture of today's results page.
What should I do if my site is not ranking for a keyword?
First make sure the page can rank at all. Check that it is indexed with the Google Index Checker, and that no noindex tag or robots.txt rule blocks it. A page Google has not indexed cannot appear at any position.
Then compare your page with the top 10 the checker shows. If they are all guides and yours is a product page, or the other way round, the query wants a different kind of page, and no amount of tuning will move yours. If they match yours in type, look at what they cover that you do not, how directly they answer the query, and how many sites link to them. New pages often take weeks to settle, so check again before rewriting.
Can I check YouTube rankings or a website's overall ranking here?
No. This tool checks Google web search for one keyword and one domain. YouTube's own search ranks videos separately, and a video that shows in a Google video carousel is not counted as an organic position here.
"Website ranking" can also mean how strong a site is overall rather than where it ranks for one query. For that, the Domain Rating Checker estimates a site's authority from its backlinks.
Questions
- Is this keyword rank checker free?
- Yes, with a free hyperank account. Each check searches Google live, so runs are rate limited to keep it free.
- How deep does the rank checker search?
- It reads the top 30 organic results, the first three pages. Very few clicks go past page three, so a position beyond 30 is reported as not ranking.
- Why is my ranking different from what I see in Google?
- Your own Google results are personalised by location, search history and device. The checker searches from a neutral location in the country you choose, which is closer to what a new visitor sees.
- Can I track rankings over time?
- This free tool checks one keyword at a time, live. hyperank's paid plans track your keywords and AI visibility prompts every day and chart the changes.
- Which countries can I check rankings in?
- Eleven: the United States, United Kingdom, India, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore. Results are for the whole country, not a city, so local map rankings are not covered.
- Why does a different page of my site rank instead of the one I wanted?
- Google picked the page it thinks answers the query best. Strengthen the page you want: make it the clearer answer, link to it from the other page with the keyword as anchor text, and avoid two pages targeting the same query.
- How often should I check keyword rankings?
- Weekly is enough for most sites. Daily checks mostly show normal movement of a few places. Check right away after a site migration, a large rewrite or a Google core update, when real changes happen.
- What is a good keyword ranking?
- For most keywords the goal is page one, positions 1 to 10, because few searchers go further, and the top three positions take most of the clicks. A position between 11 and 20 is a good sign that the page is relevant: it usually needs a clearer answer, better internal links or a few more links from other sites to reach page one. On a query where Google shows an AI Overview, also check whether you are cited in it, since that answer sits above every organic result.
