Free tool
Twitter Username Checker
Whether a handle is valid and free, with alternatives when it is taken.
How it works
What is the Twitter Username Checker?
The Twitter Username Checker is a free tool that tells you whether an X handle is valid and free to register. Enter the handle you want and it returns Available, Looks available, Taken or Unavailable, the last meaning X is holding it back, and checks close alternatives, such as adding hq or get, at the same time.
How to use the Twitter Username Checker
- Type the handle you want into Handle you want. The @ is optional.
- Press Check handle.
- Read the verdict: Available, Looks available, Taken or Unavailable, with a sentence that explains it.
- If it is taken, look down Alternatives for a close variant that is free, then claim it on X.
What are the rules for an X username?
A new X handle needs 5 to 15 characters, made of letters, numbers and underscores. No spaces, dots or dashes. It cannot contain the words Twitter or Admin.
Handles are not case-sensitive, so @BuildWithFocus and @buildwithfocus are the same handle. The checker applies these rules before it looks the handle up, and tells you which one a handle breaks.
What do the results mean?
Available means the handle is free to register right now. Looks available means no public account uses it, and signup is where you confirm it. Taken means an account already has it.
Unavailable means X is holding the handle back, usually because it is reserved or belongs to a suspended account. It may never come free, so pick one of the alternatives.
